The history behind MEPS began decades before the company was founded. Don Davis needed dependable AC power aboard his sailboat, where the space and weight required by a conventional gasoline generator made it impractical. Working with an engineer friend, Don developed an engine-driven power-generation concept that used the engine already onboard. That work led to patented technology and was later commercialized through Power Technologies, Inc.
Billy Chambers began working for Don at Unitron in Garland around 1967 and spent decades gaining experience in mobile power generation. Don sold Unitron around 1986, and Billy remained with the successor owners for several years before leaving. Don later operated Power Technologies, which commercialized the engine-driven system during the 1990s before ceasing operations around 1998.
In 1999, Billy founded Mobile Electric Power Solutions, Inc. in Garland, Texas. MEPS was already established before Billy later acquired Don’s patent and related technology rights. That acquisition allowed the work to continue under MEPS, but Billy’s contribution extended far beyond purchasing a patent.
Under Billy’s leadership, MEPS preserved and further developed the technology, engineered vehicle-specific mounting and drive systems, expanded its manufacturing and technical-support capabilities, built long-term customer relationships, and developed the broader product family that includes MobilePower, RoadPower, SeaPower and today’s MEPS Hybrid.
Billy’s son, Derrel Chambers, joined MEPS in 2003. Today, MEPS remains a family-owned, veteran-owned American manufacturer, continuing the practical, engineering-driven approach that has defined the company from the beginning.
